Revd Dr David McLachlan BA, BD, MTh, PhD
Tutor in Theology
Email: d.mclachlan@spurgeons.ac.uk
David studied metallurgy and the science of materials at Oxford University, back when the dinosaurs roamed the earth. He then worked in finance in London for seventeen years. During that time, he came to faith and was baptised. Later, aged 40, he responded to God’s surprising but amazing call to Baptist ministry and trained at Spurgeons. While working in pastoral ministry, David became interested in Christian practical, cultural, and theological responses to disability. This was through friends with disabilities, as well as a long association with a centre for young people with epilepsy. David returned to Spurgeons to undertake a masters degree, then a PhD. One focused on questions of healing, the other on the relationship between disability, creation, sin and the atonement of Christ. During that time, David also taught several units as an associate tutor of the College. After another spell of pastoral ministry (as joint pastor with his wife, Mary, who also trained at Spurgeons), he has returned to the College once more, as a full-time tutor in Christian doctrine.
David has for some years been involved as a member of the Baptist Union Disability Justice Hub theology group.
David and Mary have four adult children. Outside of work, David’s more active interests include rock climbing, hiking, and surfing. His musical taste leans towards jazz.
