Introduction
Spurgeon’s College is passionate about enabling gospel advancement, by empowering men and women, through education, spiritual formation and training, to be the Christian leaders God has called them to be. We want to train men and women to become confident, capable changemakers within your church and community setting.
Bi-Vocational Training is designed for someone who has a deep sense that God is calling them to Christian service (like Church leadership or accredited ministry), but who needs to continue to work to support themselves during their training. We passionately believe that God wants to transform this country and that an urgent need during our Lord’s own ministry is as real today as ever. Jesus said to his disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the labourers are few. Therefore, pray the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into His harvest’ (Matt 9:37-38). Our BA in Theology will equip the labourers called to reap a harvest for God.
Programme Duration
BA in Theology with Ministerial Formation.
This is a six-year part-time programme.
Mode of Study
Bi-Vocational Training blends together online academic units (one evening a week for a total of 24 weeks a year) and ministerial formation which is taught via five residential intensives.
The academic units will be delivered in the evenings using a combination of recorded lectures and live Zoom tutorials. This means that your academic work is done in the comfort of your own home and in a fairly flexible manner.
Spiritual formation will be enriched by weekly pastoral groups and occasional retreat days (Saturdays) where those preparing for Christian leadership can have fellowship and worship with others on the same discipleship journey.
Programme Structure
Each year will consist of 60 academic credits including ministerial formation.
Our heart is to form disciple-making disciples, with the God-centred idea of personal vocation and who share our passion to see the gospel advance in our country and beyond.
Course Overview
- The potential minister in training (MiT) leader continues in their full-time job.
- The Zoom tutorials for academic units are delivered on a Tuesday evening between 7.00pm – 9.15pm.
- Ministerial formation is delivered in 5 residential intensives each year (Saturday and Sunday). Currently, these intensives take place at Spurgeon’s College in London, but may be delivered in other regions if there is a cohort of 8-10 students.
Placements
- For Baptist MITs, Baptist Regional Ministers will work with the College in arranging suitable placements for MiTs. A placement will normally be a total of 8 hours a week where you will gain a wide experience of ministry over the 6 years.
- Students from other denominations will be supported in finding their placement if it is not within their home church.
- The College will help find suitable Placement Supervisors who will provide mentoring and support from their own experience in ministry.
